ABOUT THE MAKER
Carey, Kyle
My name is Kyle Carey, I am 18 years old and am the youngest child of Peter Carey the knifemaker. My dad and I spend a lot of time in his knife shop especially during the summers when I'm not in school and not wakeboarding or dirt bike riding. I've always helped my dad in his shop or the garage working on cars, motorcycles, boats or his welding equipment and most recently helping him with his knives. My dad has taught all his kids to be able to work with our hands, to work hard and to take pride in our work. I help my dad in his knife shop by cutting out folder frames, making pocket clips and learning how to run his equipment. This summer my dad and I started a project knife called the "Carey-Dashi" styled after a Japanese Kiridashi, I do most of the work on the knife except grinding the bevel, something that I will soon learn and my dad performs quality control on my work. In the future we plan on working on new designs that we can work on together and to help me make a little extra spending money.I have been around knives since I was a little boy hunting and fishing with my dad and grandpa and hope to be able to contribute to my dad?s ideas for future knives."
Carey, Peter
Visit this maker's website: Peter Carey Custom Blades. "My name is Peter Carey, I was born & raised in Southern California. I've worked with structural steel as a Fabricator/Erector, Welder and Welding Inspector from 1980-2006, and have been a self employed Contractor since 1987. We built steel frame buildings, tilt-up buildings, bridges, hangars and custom homes for the rich and famous in the Los Angeles area. My fascination with knives started as a kid, I've always carried a folder and used it often when I went fishing with my dad & brother and as an adult hunting with my sons and friends - that started out my interest in owning and building them. I made my 1st knife in 1997. I made a few fixed blade knives over the next few years and then in 2000, I made my 1st folder. In 2002, I won the "Best Amateur Knife" award and "Best Folding Blade" award at the Knife Expo in Southern California. This is the time that I started to sell my knives on a part time basis. After being long time California natives, my family and I moved to the great state of Texas in 2006, where I now work as a full-time Knifemaker. I make mostly folders with a few fixed blade knives now and again. I build my knives using the stock removal method with the best materials that I can buy. The blade steels are heat treated, press quenched, cryogenically treated and triple-tempered to ensure optimal performance."
