Overview

This rare bowie from the legendary D.E. Henry features his hand rubbed, satin finish. Henry was the first knife maker to utilize this finish. Mr. Henry was also the first knife maker to number his knives, this piece being #152. This knife features a nickel silver guard and escutcheon plate. The escutcheon on this piece has been engraved to read "Leonard", which is the last name of the gentleman this piece was made for, a medical doctor and well known firearms collector from South Dakota. The handle scales on this piece are ivory and show no signs of cracking/splitting/checking. Guard shows scuffs and signs of handling, otherwise this knife is in excellent condition. This gorgeous piece comes in the original scabbard. Both the chape and the locket of the scabbard are engraved and show very light handling marks. Mr. Henry's bowie knives are the bowies by which all other bowie knives are measured. He was a true pioneer in the world of custom knives. This rare piece is truly a piece of custom knife history. Mr. Henry only made a total of 466 knives over the course of his 40 year knife making career, sometimes spending more than 100 hours on a single knife.

About the Maker

Henry, D.E.

D.E. Henry was one of the best bowie makers of all time. Henry did his homework in addition to being a near flawless craftsman. He ground his blades from 440C and D2 and didn't have much good to say about forging or pattern welded steel. He was the first to start using a hand rubbed finish and his Sheffield pattern bowies are still some of the best out there. Passed away in 1993.
