Overview

This set of knives was made by Scott Sawby and Steve Mullin. The dimensions listed are for the button lock folder. The fixed blade features two blades that can be interchanged, but truthfully I'm not sure how they go in and come out. The Damascus blade is a drop point and has a fileworked spine, .184" blade stock and 1.025" blade depth, has some light scratches and oxidation. The other blade is mirror/satin finished with fileworked spine, .187" blade stock and 1.042" blade depth, Has some light scratches, mostly on the tang that will be hidden in the knife. Both blades are #044 on the tang. The handle has a stainless frame/dovetailed bolsters/liners and jade scales, has scratches on the bolsters/spine/tang. The folder is a button lock, the blade has a mirror polish with engraved flats and a nail nick. The handle has engraved stainless dovetailed bolsters, front and rear, jade scales, checkered push button, fileworked stainless liners and a stainless backspacer. Handle has some scratches. This knife has #154 inside the frame. Comes with a wooden box, but the latch it broken. Not sure if the folder originally came with the knife or not, but it certainly matches and makes a nice set. Each of these pieces has scratches, but overall it is a great set, in relatively good condition.

About the Maker

Mullin, Steve

Steve Mullin made knives under the "Pack River Knife Company" brand. He began making knives in the mid 1970's and is now retired.

Sawby, Scott

"I was born in North Dakota, but spent most of my youth in Illinois. I went west to attend college; and after graduating and a stint in the army, I returned to Utah State University to pursue a Master’s degree in biology. It was there in 1970 I began making knives as a hobby. It was difficult to get started back then, as there were no books on knifemaking and very few makers around to get advice from. I teamed up with Steve Mullin and we went north to see Bernard Sparks in Dingle, Idaho. Bernie was one of the original custom knifemakers and a founding member of the Guild. He pointed us in the right direction, showed us what a belt sander was, and we went back to Logan to construct one. For the next few years we made knives either full or part time depending on what other employment was available. In 1976 Steve and I bought adjoining pieces of land in North Idaho, built log homes on them and became professional knifemakers. Our first shop was built of logs. We eventually outgrew it and in 1983 I sold my half to Steve and built a shop of my own nearby where I work to this day."
