Overview
Lacking the appropriate Japanese name for this style knife, we have called it a large hunter, but in some respects it could be close to the equivalent of a Japanese Bowie style. The forging of this blade has yielded very distinct patterns. 3/16 inch thick at the spine with a blade depth of 1 1/2 inch. Exposed half tang. All blade inscriptions are in Japanese. This piece comes from a private collection and there are some small " dark spots" on the blade. Included is an intricately embroidered sash with waist cord. Blade Steel: Hitachi Smothering White Steel
ABOUT THE MAKER
Saji, Takeshi
Takeshi Saji was born in 1948 at Takefu city of Fukui prefecture, another knife city famous for Echizen Uchihamono (Hammer forged knives). He was appointed as the "Traditional Craftsman". Unlike Seki knives, his knife blades are shaped by hammer forging out of the laminated carbon steel.
