Massyn, Fancois
My journey in knife making began in 1989 in Welkom, where I discovered my passion for crafting functional works of art. In 1990, I joined the esteemed Knife Makers Guild, receiving invaluable guidance from the legendary Fanie la Grange. A move to Richards Bay in 1994 marked a turning point in my life. For seventeen years, I dedicated myself to raising my children and exploring the pristine coastlines of South Africa through fishing—a cherished interlude before destiny called me back. When the time was right and my children had embarked on their own journeys, I rediscovered my old tools and materials, long stored away. With renewed energy and a workshop reborn, I began the process of re-entering the world of knife making. To my astonishment, I found that the art had evolved dramatically; knife quality had soared to new heights and materials had advanced beyond my early experiences. Embracing the challenge, I rejoined the Knife Makers Guild in 2013. Since then, my focus has shifted from traditional fixed blades to crafting IKBS flippers—a refined expression of precision and style. With deep gratitude to Andre Thorburn for his inspiration and support, each knife I create is not just a tool, but a timeless piece of art, meticulously crafted to perfection.
