Overview
Lebel rifle M 1886 and further Lebel models. Serial number 219369. Superb long cruciform blade with French inspection marking: T in a circle on ricasso. Excellent alloy-silver grip, detachable to the blade tang. Made without a guillon. Crossguard with a muzzle ring and a checkered press stud.
During WWI, the Lebel M 1886-15 were made without a quillon. First examples were made with alloy-silver hilts. In October 1915 already the French Ministry allowed the use of brass for the hilts. This example was made before October 1915 when the production continued with brass made hilts. The total production of the M 1886-15 stopped at the end of the War.
These originally had 15" blades. This one has been shortened to 13.5". I imagine it was broken off and resharpened.
Made during a very short period, the Lebel M 1886-15 with alloy-silver grip is much more scarce than the same bayonet with a brass grip.
Has some scratches and oxidation spots. Good condition for its age.
