Layaway Information

Layaway Policies

We offer a layaway plan on select products so you may pay for your order over a period of 60 days. Products that are eligible for layaway will show "Layaway Available: Yes" on the product page.

Here's how it works:

The total amount of the order excluding shipping, tax, or fees is divided into three (3) equal payments. The first payment is due with the order, the second payment is due 30 days later, and the final payment is due 60 days after the order.

There is a $15 non-refundable fee for layaway orders. This fee is added to the first payment along with the shipping and any tax. The first payment is made when the order is placed.

Example: Your order total is $300 plus $12.75 shipping and handling. If you select the layaway option, your payments would be:

  • $127.75 (1/3 of purchase = $100 + $15 layaway fee + $12.75 shipping)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)
  • $100.00 (1/3 of purchase = $100)

If your initial payment is made by credit card, we will automatically process the 2nd and 3rd payments at the appropriate time using the same credit card information. You will be reminded via email that a payment will be charged. If you need to change this for any reason, please contact us.

For payments made other than credit card, payment must be received within seven (7) days of the due date or the order is subject to cancellation. You will receive a reminder via email that a payment is due.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for prepayment.

Additional products may be added to a layaway order without penalty. A new payment schedule will be calculated based on when additional products are added.

If you wish to complete payment early and have your order shipped, you may contact us at any time during the 60 day period. There is no penalty for early payment.

Cancellations of layaway orders are subject to a restocking/processing fee of 10% of the order total (not including tax and shipping costs). This restocking fee is in addition to the $15 non-refundable layaway fee.

Overview

Custom knives born from the skills and experience cultivated in Seki, crafted with dreams and vision.

About the Craftsman Toshiyuki Takahashi

Toshiyuki Takahashi was born and raised in Seki City, the heart of Japanese blade-making. Now 54, he has spent three decades refining his skills at one of the Seki city's leading knife manufacturers, where he has played an important role in production and development. His technical expertise and dedication to craftsmanship have earned him respect within Seki's blade-making community. Drawing on the skills and experience cultivated in his hometown of Seki, Mr. Takahashi now focuses on creating custom knives with his own dreams and vision. The Field Skinner Knife represents this new chapter—a knife that brings together his accumulated knowledge, personal standards, and aspirations for what a custom knife should be.

Mr. Takahashi's Knife Making Philosophy - VG10 Mono-Steel

Mr. Takahashi prioritizes practicality and cutting performance above all else. For this knife, he selected solid VG10 steel for its edge retention, ease of maintenance, and reliable cutting ability. The blade is ground in a Hamaguri (Convex) profile and Black Finished, a combination chosen to balance durability with strength. To add visual interest and dimension to the overall form, Mr. Takahashi applied a hammered texture near the Hilt area. This Tsuchime Hammered finish creates subtle depth while complementing the knife's clean lines.

The handle is carved, handcrafted from a single block of rare, dense natural wood called"神代欅 Ancient Buried Zelkova”. Takahashi hand-contoured each handle symmetrically, working from the block while visualizing the finished form and considering how it will feel in the hand and how the owner of the knife will feel while gripping. Each handle is individually carved and polished to completion.

Field Skinner Knife (Black Edition)

This is a Mr. Takahashi's aggressive, yet sophisticated, practical Field Skinner Knife with 6.2" Hamaguri-Ba (Convex Edge) Black Finished, Solid VG-10 Blade with Tsuchime Hammered Texture.

5.1" Hand-Contoured 神代欅 Ancient Buried Zelkova Wood Handle with Brass Hilt and Brass tubular Lanyard Hole on end. Comes with Custom Double Stitched Leather Sheath with belt hanging strap with Stag Horn tip on end.

What is Jindai Keyaki (Ancient Buried Zelkova)?

Thousands of years ago, a Zelkova tree fell — buried beneath the earth by flood, eruption, or earthquake — and quietly waited. What emerges from that long sleep is Jindai Keyaki: ancient timber with a warmth and depth that only time can create. Centuries underground transform the wood's character entirely. The grain remains bold and strong, but the color shifts to something rarer — soft greys, warm dark browns, and deep earthy tones shaped by the minerals of the soil around it. Mr. Takahashi chose this wood because it tells a story. Like the knife itself, it is patient, purposeful, and built to last. Each handle is unique. Color, grain, and tone vary naturally — no two are ever the same.
