Overview

In the November 2004 issue of "Blade Magazine" Grant and Gavin Hawk are featured in the magazines "Profile in Steel" section. The E.T. (External Toggle)is not mentioned as it was still in the design/development stage when the profile was prepared, however, to quote Grant from the article, "My main interest in making a knife is the development of unique locking mechanisms. If we're famous for anything, it's our off-beat engineering of folding knife locks." The E.T. is an exceptional example of Grant and Gavin's unique engineering style and "think out of the box" approach. The 7075-T6 aluminum provides approximately twice the properties of the usual 6061 aluminum. The bushings/washers at all pivot points are phosphor bronze and the blade was heat treated by Chris Reeve. One must hold and handle this knife to begin to appreciate the technical genius behind its creation. Full descriptive and operation instructions from Grant and Gavin are included. About the Maker

Hawk, Grant & Gavin

Grant Hawk and his son Gavin, of Idaho City, Idaho started making knives in 1994. Grant had just ended a 20 year career as a prospector and manufacturer of mining equipment. "I spent years making everything I needed out of anything I could find," Grant said. "I believe those experiences helped me to see solutions lying below the surface. To me, designing a knife is much like prospecting because it seems more a matter of discovery than an act of creation. The art of the prospector is to discover the unknown through the application of logic, hard work and luck. Whenever unrelated ideas are found to mesh perfectly, luck is playing its part and every prospector knows, it's better to be lucky than smart." After attending the Oregon Knife Collectors Association Show in 1994, Grant and Gavin were not only inspired to become knifemakers, but were determined to make a better folder, the result of which is their custom D.O.G. folder, now available from CRKT in a production model.
