Overview

Bill Moran is recognized as the grandfather of American custom knifemaking and the founding father of the American Bladesmith Society. He started pounding steel, making knives more than fifty years ago. If you're lucky enough to find a custom-made Moran to buy, expect to shell out five-figures, minimum. His work and designs are that revered. Spyderco is privileged to offer a production fixed-blade collaboration patterned in Bill Moran's ageless tradition. We've made it available in two distinct blade shapes. The FB02 (pictured) has a drop-point shape while the FB01 has an upswept Bowie-style blade. Both blades are flat-ground VG-10 and carry Bill's signature. They are tapered, starting thick where the blade joins the handle, thinning down the spine to a fine, uniformly ground tip. In the hand the knife conveys a unique feeling of balance, called by some a sweet spot. The sweet spot is due to the blade and handle being comparable in weight. This balance transfers into a feeling of steady control over the cutting edge. The FRN handle three-dimensionally fills out the palm and is inlayed with a panel of non-sliding Kraton. Highly recommended for hunting and camping both models come in a molded Boltaron sheath with multi-position G-Clip fastening system. Specifications Length Overall: 8 1/16" (205 mm) Blade Length: 3 7/8" (99 mm) Cutting Edge: 3 3/8" (86 mm) Blade Thickness: 1/8" (3 mm) Blade Steel: VG-10 Weight: 3 oz. (84 g) Handle Material: FRN Has some light scratches, otherwise excellent condition. Comes with original box, sheath and papers.

About the Maker

Spyderco
Spyderco

Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. Initially, the company focused on selling their first product the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker™, primarily at fairs and trade shows around the country. In 1981, the Glessers put down roots in Golden, Colorado and introduced the first Spyderco folding knife. That knife pioneered the concept of a round hole in the blade for one-handed opening, a clip on the handle for carry at the top of the pocket, and the option of a serrated edge for aggressive cutting performance. Those features revolutionized the knife industry and literally defined the form of the modern folding knife. Since then, Spyderco has steadily grown to become one of the leaders in the cutlery industry. In addition to a worldwide distribution network and manufacturing resources in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China, our innovation has also earned us an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards. More importantly, it has allowed us to earn the trust and loyalty of countless thousands of dedicated knife users around the world—an audience to whom we are extremely grateful.

Moran, Jr., W.F. (Bill)

William F. "Bill" Moran, Jr. had been forging knives for near twenty-five years when he introduced his re-invention of Damascus steel in 1973. Long before that noteworthy achievement, he had earned the respect of his peers and of knife enthusiasts the world over. Most of Moran's life - the years before he became known as "The Father of Modern Damascus" and those that passed since - has been devoted to the revival of bladesmithing and to the making of knives that have become classics. Among modern day bladesmiths, there is no name better known than that of Bill Moran. Among modern day forged blades, there are none so highly valued as those that have come from his forge during the past half-century. Bill founded the American Bladesmith Society. He is also the namesake of the "Bill Moran School of Bladesmithing" at Texarkana College. Inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 1986 and the ABS Bladesmithing Hall of Fame in 1996. Bill passed away in 2006.
