About the Maker

Southpaw Knives

I am a one man shop, I operate out of my home. I have a shop in the basement (clean shop) and do my grinding in the garage( dirty shop). Knifemaking is something I came to because of my lifelong love of knives. Since most custom knives are made for right handed folks (and I am a lefty), I wanted to own them, so I began making other peoples production right hand knives into left hand friendly knives, moved thumb stud and clip. As time went by I found myself having to do so much work on other peoples knives (putting new scales on etc.) I decided to try to make my own knives myself. That was in the year 2000. I've been making them from scratch since then. I am a retired US Army Officer and retired hospital Biomedical Engineer so making knives is now a retirement business. I make knives one at a time by hand, without computers or waterjet cutter, etc. All knives are made by me using my original designs. I use a variety of materials for handles, but frames, liners are all 6AL4V Titanium. Blades are Stainless, currently I am using CPM154CM, and on occasion I use Stainless Steel Damascus. All Stainless blades are professionally heat treated (I send them out to a knife blade heat treating company) and Cryo Tempered. Most of the knives I make are ""Military"" in design so CPM steels seem like a good fit. For the last couple of years I've focused on my ZGrav line, it features sealed Thrust Bearings (currently using stainless steel non rusting bearings) that allow the user to open knife with index finger flipper (WITHOUT) using the wrist flip. There are several reasons why I like this design. First, it can be opened with one hand. Second, it can't be opened by flinging the knife (centrifugal force) so it doesn't violate US Switchblade laws). Third, it has no springs to break. And finally, it's very satisfying to open.
