Overview

We named this knife the Sumo, because once you see a Sumo up close and in person, it’s not something you’ll soon forget!  What makes this knife unforgettable is that it’s a button lock flipper with multiple opening options!  You can open with thumb studs, you can use the miniature hidden flipper tab, and you can also use the pocket on the blade to open this knife…  And finally… To fully appreciate this next opening option you’ll have to watch the video below.  (Hint – you can auto pocket-edge open this knife as well!!!)

Our goal was to lighten this beast while keeping it amazingly strong, so we 3D-machined it inside and out.  This is our first button lock flipper! (And what a challenge it was to pull off!)  And finally, we added a little “bling” by anodizing the thumb studs, pocket clip, and backspacer either Bronze or Blue – very subtle and muted colors that set off the look of the knife in a way we haven’t tried before!

Overall, I’m very, very pleased with how well this knife turned out!

About the Maker

Hoback, Jake
Hoback, Jake

Jake Hoback had a variety of jobs and experiences before turning to full-time knife making and becoming a prominent figure in the industry. He studied and worked as a fish and wildlife scientific technician, was a machinist at a turbine engine company, and fabricated rock-crawling 4x4s. Jake started creating knives in 1990 in his back yard, pounding them out on a huge chunk of steel with a framing hammer and fence post nails. By 2003, Jake had sold his very first knife, and in 2009 started making knives full-time from his workshop in Northern Idaho. Jake has learned many techniques and skills from other knife makers throughout the years, but his initial work was completely self-taught. Jake’s knives are known for many innovative features, including the Hoback Roller Detent (HRD), internal lightening pockets, hardened stainless lock inserts, hardened bearing races, and smooth blade movement with no blade play. Jakes specializes in folding and fixed blade knives; but he especially enjoys the thought, design, and engineering that goes into folders.
