Overview

Spyderco X Kingdom Armory - "The Blue Collar Bomber" Hand-Ground Stovepipe*

The last of the Stovepipe Hand Ground project for now - 15 Spyderco X Kingdom Armory folders pulled from production and given the love and attention they deserve by the maker who designed them.  Each was hand ground by Dave, and now wear the same grinds as his full blown custom Butchers. All hollow grinds are done by hand, with no jigs or fixtures, just tens of thousands of hours of experience and a familiarity with the touch and feel of the art of grinding. The Primary is brought up higher than what you'll find in the production Stovepipe, and of course, that huge swedged nose is ground in a manner that complicates into the primary, creating a unique geometric diamond shape in the front.  Additionally, each folder has been stripped down and all the titanium has been cathode-bath anodized a deep blue. The stainless pivot collars have then been torch colored blue to match, and have given this project its name, "The Blue Collar Bomber"

Each folder is in turn, reassembled, tuned, and sharpened by Dave and will come with a signed COA notating their limited run status and bear their number within this run of 15.

*Stovepipe - Spyderco licensed and produced version of David Rydbom's Kingdom Armory Butcher Design. First catching Sal's Eye in early 2010, Spyderco expressed an interest in the Butcher design almost immediately after the first prototype was built in late 2009. Still, it took another 7 years until Dave and Spyderco formalized their relationship and a custom proto was built and delivered to Colorado to begin making the knife tour circuit with the Spyderco team.  Now for the first time in that 12 year journey, Spyderco is proud to offer an almost exact duplicate of that custom Butcher as built, now in full production and known as the "Stovepipe".

Manufactured in Spyderco's Tawain factory to ensure a build of the highest quality, the frames are meticulously 3d milled 6al4V titanium duplicating the exact pattern hand milled and ground in the original custom piece. Small but hugely important cross over details include a billet milled pocket clip, backspacer, and titanium pivot collar that functions as both lockbar stabilizer and overtravel. A seamless and functional method of incorporating that stability, and used quite often in Dave's custom builds. (collars and pivot screw designs inspired by Steve Kelly at Ti Connector). All blades are manufactured from 20cv stainless, and wear the appropriate origin and collaborative logos, including the trademarked Stag Chop, with the Rydbom name now proudly settled under that skull!

Comes with original zippered case. Has some scuffs, otherwise excellent condition.

About the Maker

Spyderco
Spyderco

Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. Initially, the company focused on selling their first product the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker™, primarily at fairs and trade shows around the country. In 1981, the Glessers put down roots in Golden, Colorado and introduced the first Spyderco folding knife. That knife pioneered the concept of a round hole in the blade for one-handed opening, a clip on the handle for carry at the top of the pocket, and the option of a serrated edge for aggressive cutting performance. Those features revolutionized the knife industry and literally defined the form of the modern folding knife. Since then, Spyderco has steadily grown to become one of the leaders in the cutlery industry. In addition to a worldwide distribution network and manufacturing resources in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China, our innovation has also earned us an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards. More importantly, it has allowed us to earn the trust and loyalty of countless thousands of dedicated knife users around the world—an audience to whom we are extremely grateful.

2018 will mark the 10 year anniversary of beginning this adventure and becoming a full time custom knife maker. For some reason, I’ve always strived to fly under the radar and quietly grind away. Happy to do something I love and support my family with it. Taking a passion to work and create with your hands, and making that into a career is an intensely personal journey. If I’m honest though, it has been a saving grace in my life as I’ve struggled to overcome life’s tragedies and set-backs. Like an oak cask to whiskey however, this process has both refined and distilled me as a person and as an artist. A full decade later, I’m humbled by all the support and recognition from those who have found me and purchased a piece of my life’s work. I’m built up by the process of being able to build, and that wouldn’t be possible without such a loyal customer base and trusting dealers. My family and I thank you all!
