About the Maker

Western Cutlery

Western Knives, originally known as Western States Cutlery, was established in 1911 by H.N. Platts in Boulder, Colorado. Platts, having sold his interest in W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery, moved west to serve the needs of miners, ranchers, and outdoorsmen by producing high-quality knives tailored for the western market. In 1956, the company rebranded as Western Cutlery Company. A year later, in 1957, it relocated to a new facility in the Boulder Industrial Park. By 1977, operations moved to Longmont, Colorado. Western Knives gained recognition for their innovative designs, notably the double tang construction patented in 1931, which enhanced the durability and strength of their knives. In 1984, the company was acquired by Coleman, a well-known manufacturer of outdoor equipment. Subsequently, in 1992, Camillus Cutlery Company purchased Western. Unfortunately, Camillus faced bankruptcy and closed in 2007, leading to the discontinuation of Western-branded knives. Today, Western knives are highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts for their craftsmanship and historical significance, representing a notable chapter in American cutlery history
