Overview
This French Model 1742 Chassepot Bayonet from St. Etienne Arsenal features a recurved blade with wide fullers, .428" blade stock and 1.234" blade depth, hidden tang construction.. The handle is comprised of a steel guard/muzzle loop and brass handle over hidden tang construction. Inlaid steel locking mechanism secures the handle to the bayonet lug on an Enfield Musket or similar because the hole for the barrel is about 7/8". Includes original metal scabbard. Oxidation, pitting and patina on blade, handle and sheath, has some dings as well. This piece was manufactured in 1855 based on the date on the spine of the blade.
