Overview
Extremely hard to find good examples. This is a WWI trench knife made by Au Lion, a French firm that helped to supplement the supply needed. Cast Brass handle with U.S. 1918 stamped. The blade is satin finished and double edged, .203" blade stock and 1.009" blade depth, hidden tang construction. Comes with original metal scabbard with tabs intact. Has some scratches and oxidation, otherwise excellent condition for its age.
This knife was owned and carried by Kenneth Hendrick Colville. He was a Captain in the 109th Infantry of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He served in WW1 1917-1919.
The handle has "COLVICF728LZ" scratched into the handle. It turns out this was his sons driver license number. In the 70s there was a theft prevention program called Operation ID where participants were told to carve their drivers license number into items of value.
