Overview

Spyderco persistently pushes the envelope searching for, and testing higher performance blade steels. ZDP-189 is our latest offering and is rapidly asserting itself as an up-and-coming steel. ZDP-189 steel is a Japanese manufactured powdered metal with phenomenal chemistry and 3% carbon. As a result, ZDP-189's hardness measures high on the Rockwell scale and its edge retention is exceptional. The C52PBRG Calypso Jr.'s blade has a thin layer of ZDP-189 steel sandwiched between two layers of 420J2. Layering provides the flexibility and sharpening ease associated with 420J2 while the ZDP-189 layer brings the benefits of exotic high carbon steel. The Calypso Jr. comes with a FRN burgundy handle that is Bi-Directionally Textured™ into a multi-level fish scale pattern, enhancing "grip without slip". The clothing clip is embellished with a gold Spyderco bug logo and attaches with three screws to either side of the handle for right- and left-handers. Limited piece run, available for a short time. PlainEdge blade only.

About the Maker

Spyderco
Spyderco

Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. Initially, the company focused on selling their first product the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker™, primarily at fairs and trade shows around the country. In 1981, the Glessers put down roots in Golden, Colorado and introduced the first Spyderco folding knife. That knife pioneered the concept of a round hole in the blade for one-handed opening, a clip on the handle for carry at the top of the pocket, and the option of a serrated edge for aggressive cutting performance. Those features revolutionized the knife industry and literally defined the form of the modern folding knife. Since then, Spyderco has steadily grown to become one of the leaders in the cutlery industry. In addition to a worldwide distribution network and manufacturing resources in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Italy, and China, our innovation has also earned us an impressive portfolio of patents, trademarks, and industry awards. More importantly, it has allowed us to earn the trust and loyalty of countless thousands of dedicated knife users around the world—an audience to whom we are extremely grateful.
