Overview
The Poikilo Blade AL-Khem is a massive knife that looks, feels, and sounds like it just dropped out of a UFO. This thing has a lot going on. Let's get the big thing out of the way first: the transforming blade. It looks like a fairly standard dagger blade with some screws until you rotate the pivot rings. Open it now and the blade will split into three, the two edges moving away from the middle on a series of little connectors. While it may be easy to imagine the split blade as flimsy, it's actually extremely ridged. In the standard configuration, the two main halves meet seamlessly.
To open it, pull down and back on the segmented protrusion at the top of the spine. This will disengage two locks and allow the blade to swing freely. That's when the sound and feel come into play: Two tuning fork-like components inside each side of the handle vibrate and ring whenever the knife is opened or closed, adding to the alien vibe and making it seem like it has an inner energy. Said vibe is further enhanced by the detailing on the knife's spine, all machined from titanium.
Lastly, if you'd like to double-secure the blade open, you can move the stop pin to the other side, turning the piece into a virtual fixed blade. While the AL-Khem's not made to be a practical cutter, there's nothing else like it on the market, and it's a testament to Poikilo's ability to manufacture and assemble extremely complex, high-quality knives.
