John Kenneth Wagaman, a knifemaker from Fayetteville, South Carolina, has left a somewhat mysterious trail in the world of custom knives. While he lacks a significant internet presence, some enthusiasts have encountered his work at knife and gun shows in the Fayetteville and Raleigh areas. Quality Craftsmanship: 1. Those who have seen Wagaman’s knives describe them as high-quality craftsmanship. His attention to detail and precision in making knives is evident. o Some collectors appreciate his work for both display and practical use in the field. o His knives often feature modern materials, such as stainless steel and micarta, while maintaining classic lines. o Notably, he created a modern rendition of a Scottish dirk that impressed many with its blend of tradition and contemporary elements. 2. Quiet and Unassuming: o John Wagaman comes across as unassuming and modest. He doesn’t make grand claims or seek the spotlight. o Unlike some other knifemakers who have received press attention, Wagaman quietly produces knives without fanfare. o His demeanor and focus on craftsmanship over self-promotion may contribute to his relatively low profile in the knife-making community. 3. Background and Approach: o Wagaman is a retired machinist and also owns an antique business. o His knife-making seems to be driven by passion rather than financial gain. He keeps a small inventory of knives in his store and is willing to create custom pieces for those who appreciate his work. o While other knifemakers from Fayetteville have received some press, Wagaman remains under the radar, perhaps by choice. In summary, John Kenneth Wagaman’s knives are highly regarded by those who have encountered them. His unassuming nature and dedication to craftsmanship set him apart, even if he lacks the widespread recognition enjoyed by some of his peers1. If you come across one of his knives, consider it a hidden gem crafted with care and precision.
