I always had an interest in knives even as a young boy. I grew up in Washington fishing and hunting, and my dad taught me to appreciate quality knives. Much later as an adult, I attended a knife show, and viewing the custom knives sparked my interest in making my own. I first attempted to make knives by using files, and eventually bought a grizzly grinder and made some pretty simple hunters. It was not until I met Todd Begg that my knife making skills really developed through his mentorship, teaching, and patience. Todd taught me all aspects of knife making?from grinding to business and everything in between. I will always be indebted to Todd and his mentorship. Then, Todd introduced me to Thad Buchanan. After meeting Thad he generously invited me to his house in Oregon to learn how to make Loveless style chute knives, boot knives, sub-hilts, and drop point hunters. I will always be grateful to Thad for taking the time to show me how to make these styles of knives. I am proud to call both of these men my friends. I would not have the measure of success that I have today if it were not for these two highly skilled knife makers, Todd and Thad; they helped me get to the next level in my knife making career. I would also like to thank Steve Johnson for the many answered questions, knife patterns, and all the encouragement that he graciously gave me. I have been making knives part-time now since 2007, and I am pleased to say that my equipment and experience has greatly improved with time, which allows me to make a higher quality of knife than those first ones with files and that grizzly grinder. Hopefully, in 3 to 5 years when I retire from the City of Tacoma as a Senior Maintenance Machinist I can be a full-time knife maker. I not only enjoy the craft of making knives, but quality is also very important to me. With every knife I make, I pride myself in crafting only the very highest quality that I can produce. For me, one of the best rewards in making knives is seeing the excitement and joy on someone?s face when they hold a knife that they are extremely pleased with. Last but not least, I would like to thank my late father, Harry Martindale, for imparting to me his leather craft skills, work ethic, and for being such a good, loving, and supportive father. --Gary Martindale
